Moment of Transparency

Daily dose of motivation
SimplyCare.

I began this journey skeptically. Excited and enthusiastic, but extremely skeptical. I felt as if I was entirely too late to bring myself into the natural hair community. So I sat on the idea, for about two years. Every now and again I would think about starting, but never did. Then a year ago I began this blog as a means of saying " Ok self, I am going to do this.

It's time" I threw myself into blogging and to introducing myself to the natural hair community. It was great. I had things that I wanted to achieve and ideas for this company.

The thing is my foundation was shaky, so as I would climb and progress things began to get a little wobbly. A foundation built on skepticism and "I think I can do this" is like eating soup with a fork. You're not really going to get anywhere. I felt that this market was so oversaturated I didn't know if there would be room for one more.

I began to drift away from blogging and I would touch base on twitter every now again. There were a lot of things going on in the natural hair community that I just was not a fan of. I began to think, do I really want to be apart of this. I am such a creative person and hair was beginning to take over my life. So much so that I began to do less of other things because I was so wrapped up. So I stopped.

I thought when I stopped that maybe I would start picking up other things, which I did. Honestly, not like I should have though. That was a big issue with me feeling like in order to succeed at one thing, I could only concentrate on just that. I saw my artistic side falling behind and I did not approve. What I didn't understand was why, because I had great ways to merge art and hair with SimplyCare, but it never left my notebook or my sketchbooks.

I became too much of a thinker, too much planning and not enough action. My boyfriend told me that I have too many great ideas and that I just need to do them. Sometimes I spend so much time
thinking about the whys, hows, and whats that I never really get anywhere.
Work. Beast Mode. Grind Time. Just Do It.

I was beginning to just go in circles.. new idea, plan, didn't execute, new idea, plan, didn't execute...

I began to think about SimplyCare and it's future. I didn't really see it going anywhere. I felt like as a brand it was stuck in the mud. It didn't stand out like it should, it didn't really show my creative capacity.

I wasn't happy with two of the things in my life that are supposed to make me the happiest.

So even though I blogged a couple of times here, I decided to concentrate of picking up the pieces on the art side of things. I went over to my personal art portfolio website and I was just completely disgusted. I said "Self, why did I think that this ever looked good ?" I completely trashed the old design and started from scratch.

I came up with an awesome new way to brand myself, bought the domain name and stayed up all night redesigning my website. I kept on working on it throughout that week as well.

The finished product ? www.thisartistworks.com

This artist works ? Check!

I am completely in love. I was so proud of myself. I had an idea and I executed it from start to finish. No breaks, no "I'll come to this later's".. Just plain beast mode work. This really helped to re-center my equilibrium. I now had a new home for my artwork. Plus a brand new space for something else that I am cooking up! Let's just say it is the perfect marriage of hair and art.

I feel myself less stressed now. Once I did this, I definitely knew that rebranding SimplyCare was the
right thing to do. I decided that I needed to do a complete overhaul. From the rooter to the tooter. I began to look at my brand and what needed to be done to revitalize it. I began doing research, reading, and brainstorming ways to bring my brand back to life.

How it all began.
I can't really explain how except the feeling you get when you do something so important to you that it validates the reasoning for other changes. Does that make
sense? I hope it does. While  reading Tory Johnson's book Spark and Hustle, this one sentence put it all into perspective for me. "Like yours, my businesses aren't exempt from competition. There's no shortage of books on small business, but you're reading this one." So simpl and so powerful. This statement  really gave me the extra boost that I needed.

On my book list and also my mantra.
There's definitely no shortage of personal and hair care companies, natural hair based or not. Yet, you're reading this blog, you're interested in what I have to say. So the same goes for my products. There are too many heads in this world(7 billion I believe) and probably 3x that amount of cosmetics companies. Maybe I'm exaggerating but new companies are sprouting up every day!

Rebranding SimplyCare and reworking my personal art site was really weighing on me and I had no idea.  I feel such a huge relief.

Rebuilding my foundation starting with a rebranding. I feel stronger already.

So on April 20, 2013 I will introduce you to Native Love. A place where I intend to pamper your hair and body while enriching your mind. Artistic and educational. It's more than just hair.

Thanks for sticking me with this long.

Growing Through Changes

I always try to remember this !

Growing through changes !

That's what I will call this period in my life right now. I am going and growing through changes. I fully accept and embrace it.

It feels so great to write about my business again, I seemed to let that area fall to the wayside when I began concentrating more on natural hair blog posts. I wanted to be able t make some sort of impression with my approach to natural hair blog posts. In do that though, I forgot what this blog began as. Getting back to the business part of this blog will be a great addition in my opinion.  After all, this blog is about the evolution of a business ! Being able to get great, constructive feedback from you as well is one thing that I definitely look forward too.

WHEW !!!

Well, Homecoming Weekend was a success ! Clearly that is obvious by missing 3 days of blogging.

I had a great time and once I can figure out who took photos of my hairstyle I will post them ! : )

In SimplyCare News, I will be attending a Small Business Seminar this weekend with my Beau, and I am so excited to learn new things : ) I really can't wait.  I also found some great design inspiration for my letter head and comp slip ! Plus I found inspiration for to FINALLY finish the website design for MEA Piano Studio.

Anywho, to get ready for the Small Business Seminar, I want to try to put together a packet of information about my businesses, so that I can just write notes down and ask pertinent questions. We shall see how that goes though, this week is slipping by fast.

I have a lot of freelance projects that need to get wrapped up before the end of November, so this will be a busy month ! I intend to stay on top of everything !

Oh, and before I forget, I plan on buying some products this weekend !!!!! Yay, I can't wait to mix some goodies up : )

New Twitter Background

Hello all !

So last night or if you want to get technical....really early this morning, I designed a new Twitter background. I love it ! I need to change the width so that my "Thanks for Following" shows up, but other than that I'm really happy with my end results.

Also, @TribeCalledCurl held her first #naturalhair #tweetchat and it was just as great as @HGKWW's chat.  I'm so glad that the #naturalhair chat has been brought back ! I really missed it.

Anywho, check out a screenshot of my twitter background

 Any thoughts ?? Opinions ??

Blah

Today wasn't a very productive day, I woke up with a horrible headache from the night before and it finally went ALL THE WAY AWAY like 4 hours ago... and now I'm recuperating. lol.

I did find some cute bake pans and molds to use if I make shampoo bars, lip balms, or other types of bars. I'm still looking for containers and stuff like that. I did finished my business cards tho. Take a look and let my know which one is your favorite !

Oh, and in the middle is SimplyCare's We Care wallet size list of no-no ingredients that you don't want in any of your skin, beauty, hair products..

So, feedback anyone ? Don't all jump at once !

Happy Accidents

So a few posts back, I posted about how I lost all my work that I had screenshot and posted. It turned out to be a happy accident !! It all dates back to when I decided to do another blog face lift and I picked this one abstract background and the colors were just popping !! So then inspired me to go ahead and work on the logo design again. At first I was going to go with the same color I had when I first posted the logo screenshots, but those colors from my blog background were just stuck in my mind. I decided to go ahead and use that color scheme for my company and I LOVE IT !!

Check out the screenshot of logo and color scheme !

Oh, I have also picked out a company name " Simply Care"  Right now I'm trying decide which colors I want to have the logo.

: ( Setback

So, I opened up Adobe Illustrator today to work on logos and branding today only to find out the none of the work I did yesterday was saved. How does that happen one might ask... I have NO CLUE. It's so disappointing because I worked on stuff for Simply Care for at least 9 hours... and to have basically all of it gone ? Kind of gut-wrenching. I'm just going to close the programs and sulk, then get back to starting over again later on.

Blown is not the word.

Work in Progress

So, As promised, here is the screenshot of the logos that I have been working on this evening.

I haven't decided which one to go with yet. Let me know your thoughts !

UPDATE

Top Picks So Far

Work in Progress

Screenshot of what I've been working on for the past few hours. I think I have decided on a name, but all feedback is welcome.

I'm pretty positive that I'm going to go with "Simply Care", it just opened up my creative brain cells and so many ideas came to me. I owe that to my beau, because Simply Care was his brainchild.. lol

The screen shot is various typefaces that I think would fit with the identity of this line. I also have up a logo that I designed, but I am going to design a few more. I'll do a screen shot of that when I do though. I also was playing around with different color schemes, because I like I said I don't want it to be too femenine. My beau brought up the idea of having different colors for the "For Men" "For Women". I think that is a good idea, but I still think I want a color scheme that encompasses "Simply Care" as a whole.

Like I said, any feedback would be GREAT !
-sidebar- I guess it's time for me to share this on facebook and twitter... I wanted to wait until I had a little more content but hey, carpe diem !

What's in a name ?

A name is very important, especially to a business ! I'm struggling with deciding what I will name my line. I have a couple of choices but I'm wishy-washy about them.

Possible Names

1. Simply Marvelous
2. Simply
3. Marvel
4. SM Care
5. Simple Care
6. Simply Care ( Beau's addition)

Also, which ever name I choose will tie into my "tagline" which is "(Product Name), Marvel in your natural self.... but now that I'm writing that, I'm not so sure that I still like it. LOL

Taglines
1. Marvel in your natural self
2. Total body care for the whole family
3. Simple and marvelous care for your whole body
4. Simply caring for the whole body... naturally [ Simply Care for Men, Simply Care for Women, Simply Care for Body, Simply for Hair, etc]

-sidebar- I want to push this line as "pro-male" because that is where the natural hair care/body care is lacking. There is nothing dedicated and or marketed towards men. So I don't want to make it too feminine and to dissuade potential male customers ( hetero or homo).

Then I was thinking should I make it mainly male ? but then that also limits the market. I think my first idea is the one that I would go with.

Can We Help You Find Something ?
